Searching for cancer information on the Internet is a daunting task. Typing in the word “cancer” on popular search engines produces 187 million to a billion results. Getting slightly more specific isn’t much help:
| “eating and cancer” or “eating with cancer” | produces 35 million results |
| “nutrition during cancer treatment” | produces 5 million results |
| “food for cancer patients” | produces 9 million results |
| “cancer foods” | produces 33 million results |
| “cancer diet” | produces 57 million results |
It is critical that you and your caregivers are able to find reputable sites for information on the disease itself, treatment options and effects, and the role of adequate nutrition in coping with cancer. The following sites are acknowledged among leading medical experts as being valid nutritional resources for those battling cancer:
The American Cancer Society
The American Cancer Society (ACS) is one of the premier non-profit organizations dedicated to eliminating cancer, educating the public on cancer, and advocating for cancer patients. The ACS website provides a wealth of information on numerous cancer issues.
The National Cancer Institute (NCI) is the federal government’s primary agency for cancer research and training. The NCI website is an excellent source for information on all aspects of cancer and cancer research.
Oncology nurses are key members of your healthcare team. The Oncology Nursing Society (ONS) website provides insight into this highly educated and dedicated group of nurses. Sable is a proud member of ONS.
Maintained by the Oncology Nursing Society (ONS), this website provides practical information on symptom management. The site also allows you to send confidential emails to an oncology nurse under the “Ask an Oncology Nurse” section. This is definitely one of Sable’s favorite websites!
The American Society of Hematology (ASH) is a professional association of hematologists (physicians and researchers who specialize in blood diseases including cancer). This site offers a free service for locating hematologists in your area.
Formerly the People Living with Cancer site, the cancer.net website provides comprehensive guides to over 120 types of cancer and related syndromes and is the official patient-information website for the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO). The site also offers a free service for locating an oncologist (a physician who studies, diagnoses, and treats cancer) in your area.
The American Dietetic Association is the world's largest organization of food and nutrition professionals. Sable recommends all cancer patients meet with a nutrition specialist during their cancer journey to discuss their personal dietary requirements.
