Cancer Research Shows Survival Improvements Over Past 30 Years
The CBS Evening News (9/20, lead story, 3:10, Pelley) reported that the American Association for Cancer Research issued a "milestone" report showing that "there has been remarkable progress on some cancers, but nearly no improvement in others." Medical editor Dr. Jon LaPook said, "Over the last 30 years, death rates for all cancer dropped by 22% for men and 14% for women, resulting in almost 900,000 fewer deaths in the US." American Association for Cancer Research's Dr. Judy Garber noted, "Cancer is probably 200 diseases, not one disease.

Crizotinib Expected To Be Approved For NSCLC By Year's End.
Medscape (7/12, Chustecka) reported, "Crizotinib, a new targeted drug aimed at certain patients with nonsmall-cell lung cancer (NSCLC), is expected to be approved before the end of the year." Data from phase 1 and 2 clinical trials of the drug "have already been filed for accelerated approval with the US Food and Drug Administration; phase 3 studies are ongoing." Dr.

For those interested in updates on the role of plants in treating cancer: Researchers: Giant Salvinia May Treat Cancer On its website, KTRE-TV (7/12) Lufkin, Texas reported that "giant salvinia could someday be the primary ingredient of a cancer-treating drug," according to Dr. Shiyou Li, research professor and director of SFA's National Center for Pharmaceutical Crops. "Dr Li already knows salvinia compounds in the purest form. ... can shrink human tumor cells. 'More interestingly, the chemical compounds we isolated is less toxic to normal cells, human normal cells,'" he said.

Vanderbilt-Ingram Cancer Center researchers have identified six subtypes of an aggressive and difficult-to-treat form of breast cancer, called “triple-negative breast cancer (TNBC).” In the July issue of the Journal of Clinical Investigation, Cancer Center Director Jennifer Pietenpol, Ph.D., and colleagues describe the molecular features of these six distinct subtypes and identify chemotherapies to which the different subtypes respond in cultured cells and animal tumor models.
